Hi Friends, welcome to M4 Tech. Today we’re doing a small experiment, especially for small kids. This episode is for school kids. The experiment which we’re going to do is Electro Plating. The example for this is ornaments made of 1g gold, you might’ve seen ads. They’re using this technology. To simply say, process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another material by means of electricity. It is called as Electro plating. So we’re going to show this experiment now. We’re not doing in Gold but with Copper. Gold is expensive hence we’re not using it. So we’re going to use copper and place it on another metal to coat with Electroplating. We’ll begin our work and we need a beaker and fill 3/4th of it with water. This is to prepare a solution. In order to make a solution, the chemical we need is Copper Sulphate. It is available in bangle shops and ayurvedic shops. We can take this crystals and crush it. This is not expensive, paid 20 rupees for 100g. So we’ve crushed it a bit. Why we crushed it is, so that it will be soluble faster. We can stir it. We’re trying to dissolve it and the colour is blue. We’ve made the solution, let’s keep it aside. Let me show what other things we need. We need a copper wire. We’ve cut a wire and took from it. Also we need a metal. On which metal do we need to apply copper, that one. We’re gonna apply this copper over this metal. We need a wire with couple of alligator clips. It is not mandatory, just using it for simplifying the process. Another one is a wire with one alligator clip and left the other side as it is. 9V Battery. We’re taking this battery for energy supply in order to process Electroplating. These are all the things that’s required. We’re starting the connections, taking this alligator clip and placing it on this metal piece. This side is free, we can connect to battery. Take this copper and connect it to the wire of one sided alligator clip. We can just roll this wire on it. It’ll be ready. We’re connecting the battery. The section from copper wire should be clipped with positive terminal. This alligator clips are for clipping process. Or else we can attach the wire to battery. Similarly the clip from metal piece should be attached to negative terminal. This is how the connections should be. We’re starting the experiment now. We’re taking the copper piece and placing it on our solution. Now, we can take the metal piece and place it on solution. The circuit will complete when we place these. The chemical reactions will begin. We’re just placing it inside. We’ve placed only 3/4th of the metal. I’m going to count till 10. We’ve counted till 10. When we lift it up, see. Doesn’t it look great. The metal piece has copper plating. This is called Electroplating’s base form. But when we are doing it for industry purposes, they do it more technically and perform several other methods to get the end result so accurate. Everyone will be eager to know the science behind this. We took two metals today. On positive terminal, we connect Copper as anode. Similarly on negative side, we kept a steel (blade) as cathode. We prepared a Copper Sulphate solution. Copper Sulphate solution itself contains Copper. There are many Cu2+, means there are copper ions. When we apply voltage on this, what happens is, Cu2+ ions leads to negative terminal. On negative terminal we’ve kept the steel blade. When they go there and hit the steel, reduction happens. So the Cu2+ converts into an atom. Since reduction happens, they convert to atoms and they stick on that plate. That’s why there is a coating on it. Everyone would’ve a doubt, why we kept a copper there. Like keeping a copper wire in positive terminal. Cu2+ are ions and they went from solution. Why we kept that copper wire is that, to replace the ions that are going. As the ions leave from solution, the ions get added from this wire. This is the science behind this experiment. Hope you all know what electroplating is. This technology is widely used for making the ornaments shine and for metal corrosion. It is widely used for these purposes. Similarly they use Gold and Silver for this. For applying Gold, they use gold plate and they use gold cyanide solution. And for SIlver they use Silver Cyanide and silver plate.
