In previous videos I was talking about elementary particles, fundamental forces and many more things about quantum world Then some of you guys asked me, why are we worrying so much about these tiny particles Whey are we dumping bullions of $$$ to instruments like LHC So, as an answer to all these questions, today I’m going to talk about very real and amazing machine we could build with knowledge of quantum realm All the computers are made with silicon transistors They are continue to be smaller and powerful But there is a physical limit to this technology In this kind of circuit, if we make conductors too close to each other electrons could jump between them If we make a gate too small, electrons could magically go through that We call that quantum tunneling That could completely destroy this circuit Now you can figure out that root cause of physical limitation of silicon circuits is uncertain behavior of quantum particles But scientist could turn the uncertain behavior of quantum particle in to an advantage and invent a brand new computer technology This is not a complete replace to silicon computers. But in specific cases they can provide unbelievable processing power This is Quantum computing! Bits, that means 1 and 0 are used to store data in a computer When the transistor gate is open it’s 1, when it’s closed it’s 0 2 bits will create 4 combinations 3 bits will create 6 combinations and 4 bits will create 16 combinations That means number of combinations are equal to 2 ^ Bits Quantum computer are using a quantum particle as a bit. So we call it a Qubit It could be an Electron, Photo or any particle Common practical usage is outer electron in phosphorus atom When the spin is up, it considered as 1 and 0 when it’s down The spin could be manipulated with electromagnetic field So far the description of quantum computer is very close to silicon computer But quantum particles are weired The spin of electron could be up, down and when we are not observing it could be up and down at the same time We call it quantum superposition Using quantum superposition, a quantum computer can provide unbelievable processing power In a classical computer, if we have 2 bit, it can create 4 combinations, yet use only one at a given time With 2 qubits it can create 4 combinations. But with superposition It can use them all at the same time With 20 qubits it can maintain about one million combinations With 60 qubits, it can maintain number of combinations equal to all the particles in universe Now you must have figured out that Quantum computer is not a replacement for classical computer This is specifically designed for parallel processing Quantum computer won’t be able to provide any extra speed for day to day work. Sometimes it could be slower This could be used for database searching Classical computer are checking search paths one by one But a quantum computer can search many paths at the same time and reduce search time drastically We are using encryption for data protection If you want to break an encryption code, you will have to bruit force it (Check all the combinations) Even a supercomputer will take trillions of years to do that A quantum computer can try millions of combinations at the same time and drastically reduce the time taken by bruit force That means, with the development of quantum computers, we may have to rethink data security Scientists are using simulations to predict the behavior of weather, space, DNA etc They are time consuming since there are millions of calculations But a quantum computer can do millions of calculations at the same time and cut down the time taken significantly We already have real quantum computers (sort of) D-Wave is one of those But they need very specific environmental conditions And we can’t see what’s going on inside Because that will knock down superposition This technology is still in very early stage We are too early to predict what it will be and how it will change out lives You must know many things about this We’ll discuss them in the comment section You can contact me on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ If you like to watch more interesting video like this, SUBSCRIBE!!
